While the tumblr has fell silent, the team have been working in the shadows, preparing our next major update. The bad news is that, while we had planned to release a demo by the start of the new year, major computer failures on the part of multiple team members have stalled this for a few more weeks.

The good news, though, is that a new demo is coming in a few weeks! Barring any more unavoidable delays, you guys can expect this demo to come out by the beginning of February. Before I deleted the folder I looked in there for those two specific message numbers and they were not showing as apparently they would have been quarantined but somehow the virus must still have been in there somehow.

So then I created another Word document for testing and emailed it to myself again. The good news is that there was no virus popup so whatever was hidden in there appears to be gone. The bad news is that I deleted the last 4 months of emails too. It looks like IncrediMail uses those numbered folders to store the email messages and I assume after a certain number of messages or size, it creates a new one since they started at 1 and looking around in there, a few of them include attachments picture, documents, etc.

However it must store the headers somewhere else because all the message headers are still visible on the main screen although no messages attached to them. So at least I can look through the headers and if there was anything particularly important I can go back to the sender again.

Small price to pay to finally get rid of this thing. Painful procedure but I think I'm fully back in business again. Thanks for your help and patience. I'll let the dust settle for awhile and then I might come back to the appropriate forum board to investigate that Repair Upgrade to see if it might help speed up this "dinosaur". Tonight I created another Word document that I was emailing to myself at my office and up comes the same virus message again! I deleted the message anyway. It also says the other infected file the original one I created on the desktop is now also infected. That one disappeared after the quarantine. Then I created a new test Word document and emailed it to myself and same Windows Defender popup.

I might as well just move all my emails out of IncrediMail and trash the whole thing. I was on a number of web sites today but none of them are suspicious sites. That's it - it's and I'm quitting for tonight. I've had enough and tomorrow's a work day.

The fact that it has been discontinued with no support should be enough reason to uninstall it In the past I've even seen it being used for coin mining so the potential for serving as a malware downloader comes as no big surprise.

Going to take me some time to move all those stored emails out of there into external folders - have to do them one by one - and I've got a lot. I still prefer to use local POP3 email and not webmail services so I've been thinking about Thunderbird - I looked at it some time ago briefly and kind of liked what I saw of it. That was when I learned about IncrediMail being discontinued and they said it would no longer work so Thunderbird was temporarily installed as the backup in case that was true.

Actually only their IMAP service stopped working because they were shutting down their mail servers. My POP3 kept running fine. My email address is through my local ISP for many years and I don't want to change that. They have a webmail interface so I can see messages there if I want before they download to my desktop and I've now set that to keep messages there temporarily until I clean out the IncrediMail and get the alternative set up. I have a GMail account but only use that occasionally to message when not at my computer.

I haven't had great experiences with webmail services as I find it too easy to get spammed there and I don't really like their interfaces either. I had a Yahoo account a few years ago for secondary use but it ended up getting dozens of spam a day - including some disgusting stuff too - so I ended up dumping it and switching to GMail.

Interestingly I found that I started getting a few spam messages on GMail months before I ever sent my first email from it so I have no idea how spammers got that email address. A full scan with this program, might find another instance of this Trojan that could reside elsewhere on your PC. Your W10 version is not the same as the one on which this was discovered, but you might give it a try anyway. If you find that Defender is the only antivirus program that is detecting this Trojan, it may be a False Positive.

That is, the result from Defender having found it earlier, and has left a copy of the "notification" that reported it, in its Protection History.
