Aebersold play along rapidshare

Are there other particular volumes that are noteworthy? This is a bit upsetting. I've finished three Aebersold volumes, and was ready to book the Blue Note. Seriously, I'm just having fun, and not trying to be a pro jazz player at this point. I've found the quirks with some of the Aebersolds distracting Hal Galper's comping, for example , and thought that maybe the Hal Leonard equivalents would be less choppy. Expressionless is another word that springs to mind.

I suppose they wanted to keep it neutral so you can learn the basic melody and add your own interpretation later. No, Birk's Works is on one of the blues y volumes. I have quite a few. As they're so cheap from amazon sellers I'll buy one if it has three tunes I'm really interested in! They're more uniform in style and quality than the Aebs. So the melody can't be eliminated? That's odd. Also, with that arrangement, it would also seem that you could eliminate either the bass or the piano, right?

I thougt that was supposedly a problem with Hal Leonard volumes. If having a more balanced stereo image is important to you, then they're definitely the way to go. I have vol. They're very very good. They're different from the Aebersolds in the following aspects - Stereo sound vs separate channels - Musicians are unknowns, but they're very very good - Only 10 tunes per volume - Aebersold usually has 12, and 24 on the 2- CD sets - High recording quality definitely better than some of the older Aebersolds - Fewer choruses often only one.

Average track length is about 3. For example sometimes they have an interesting intro or ending, and the rhythmic feel varies more between tracks Regarding Keith's "melodies played too literally" comment, I think the whole point of having the melody is to serve as a basic "reference" melody when you learn a tune you're not very familiar with. This means for example that it is usually more rhythmically sophisticated than what is in the Real Book chart. But if you need to listen to a hip version of the melody, you should search for it in your favorite musician's recordings, than in a play- along.

Btw, in which Aebersold volume do you dislike Hal Galper's comping? These days I've been listening to vol25 "All time standards" as background music during my day job, and the guy really kicks ass in that volume IMHO.

Bob www. That sounds logical. So the piano and bass are both present on both left and right. Probably a typo on the original reply. Excellent comments, Michael. I have a few of the Galper volumes, and he usually plays very 'busy' for my taste, with lots of stabs on upbeats. Maybe OK if there was more need to propell the rhythm, but I find it annoying on legato ballads.

Well, ballads that were originally legato. Example: Vol 40, the title track, "Round Midnight" Rather than providing a smooth, stable backdrop, Galper sounds like he doesn't want to be overshadowed by the bass or the drums. Effectively 'out-rhythms' his own rhythm section. And it doesn't bring out the beauty of the changes, IMO. That's his style, and it's obvious on his regular recordings I don't even like it there. I don't think that much sonic dominance is appropriate for the Aebersold stuff.

It would be better for them to lay back to let the soloist explore what the tune is about rather than the backing dictating every nuance. It sounds like the Hal Leonard volumes attempt to be more neutral, which seems like a good idea. I see your point about Galper. I haven't listened to my other Galper volumes recently, but from what I remember I agree that he tends to overplay sometimes, especially on ballads. But for medium or uptempo swing tunes such as those in vol25 , his hard-swinging, intense, and even somewhat "macho", dare I say, comping style sounds appropriate to me.

Yet I agree that for the purposes of a play-along, a less busy comper would be more appropriate. Galper would be ideal to comp for Cannonball playing Cherokee, but for a novice trying to find his way through How High the Moon, he might be somewhat overwhelming. Haven't you done any homework on these playalongs?
