Sony hxd970 update problem

I don't want to take the wrong action and completely ruin the recorder if indeed the process hasn't already done so. Please can anybody in-the-know shed some light on this and tell me what I can do to save the unit?

I had the same problem with update yesterday morning on rdr HXD update, my friend has some machine and has same problem. Waited 1. The guide is not populated, is a very odd colour and turns itself off after about 3 seconds. Tried firmware update via computer this just loads then turns the power on the machine off so cant update that.

This morning at aprox 10am update started again at 6. Again friends machine says the same. I have emailed the support, but nothing back yet. You are not alone and sony need to sort this update out. Sony says it is experiencing "a major technical issue" after many owners of its DVD recorders lost access to their Freeview TV channels. Dozens of owners have written to the BBC to complain that a malfunctioning software update on Friday has caused their devices to stop receiving or recording Freeview.

Many complained about a lack of response from Sony customer support. Sony said it was doing everything possible to solve the problem.

We will update you asap," the Japanese firm tweeted back on Saturday in response to dozens of messages about the problem. The company's own support forums as well as other independent online sites were filled with complaints from irate users over the weekend.

I think mine was on 1. I was stuck with a non-functioning recorder until, having got no help, I took it upon myself to risk disaster and fumble with the unit to see what it would respond to Luckily for me, it didn't end in an expensive door-stop but operated normally after a 5-second soft-reset on the power-button.

Of course, there was still the EPG thing as described in the hundreds of posts in dozens of similar threads , but by that time it had been corrected and so setting the digital tuner to UK from France sorted that out. All up and running, then, and the firmware-upgrade to 1.

I'd hoped to get some advice of what to do but none was forthcoming, sooooo In case anyone seeing this has the same problem upon performing an update I could not seem to get any response at all from 'normal' prodding of handset buttons or main buttons so it seemed to me that there were two options: 1 perform a soft-shutdown via a 5-seconds-or-so push of the unit's power button, or 2 cut and then restore the power which I presumed I'd have to do anyway if 1 didn't work. Good luck : o.

Hi, I've had this DVD recorder for 2 years now and had no problems at all, records great and has burnet disks fine as well. Yesterday I came to burn a lot of programs I want to delete of the hard drive.

I went through the normal dubbing procedure in the system menus and the disk starts to right, after 2 mins I start to hear a grinding spinning sound from the drive, its not that loud but its noticeable. After 5 more mins I get a message on the screen saying 'dubbing failed' the disk has been semi written on when I inspect it. This happened 5 times in a row. Is it on its way out or is there something I can do to fix this? I'm going to try some different DVDs tonight just on the off chance it that.

Any help I'd be most great full for. Gavtech Administrator. Although such problems are commonly due to bad discs Test for this by burning something else. Cheers guys, i'll give this a go. I've tried 4 different brands of disc and this is what ive found, none of them work when the discs are recorded on high speed dub, they spin for a minute then i get 'cannot complete dub'. Full reset hold Stop button on front panel, then press Power button on front panel.

This puts the device back into factory startup 2. Removed aerial lead from back of device. Powered on device and did the 'Easy Setup' but with no aerial so no channels detected 4. Full reset again and then removed the power plug from the wall totally disconnected power 5. Left it for 30 mins 6. Powered on again still with no aerial in and followed 3 to 5 above for a second time 7. Reconnected aerial and started it up for a third time and this time went through the normal Easy Setup.

During 7. I think it was some combination of tuning with no aerial connected plus the full power-off for 30 minutes which seems to have fixed it and cleared down whatever was causing the problem. Thanks for your help and advice. I'm happy it is back working again, for now! Just have to re-program all of those timer settings into it now!! These are imo one of the best bits of kit Sony or any other manufacturer come to that have ever produced. Nothing happened with Stop and Power buttons, so I tried unplugging it for awhile.

After I plugged it back in, it still said Update, but now when I try to turn it on or press Stop and Power it says 'Locked' for a second before going back to Update. I now have this problem too. Stuck on Update, won't turn on or anything.

I tried the Stop and Power button thing; no joy. Tried unplugging it for a while and plugging back in. Now trying to turn it on or pressing Stop and Power produces the word Locked, but nothing else.

Does anything happen if you hold the front panel power down for several seconds perhaps as many as 10 or 15 seconds. To do this hold the power button down until the unit breaks out of update and begins to switch off it will look as if it is turning off and you will hear the hard drive power down.

Then give the power button another quick press you might need to try this process a couple of times if you are not quick enough with the second button press as it shuts down. If the above succeeds, you should break out of the update loop and the Sony should start up normally and allow you to access menus etc. Which part of the world are you in? I am in Hertfordshire and receiving on the Crystal Palace transmitter which this week has been on reduced power I believe for some services.

There have been lots of Freeview channel updates going on here which I think is part of the problem. My friend, nearby, who I mentioned above originally had no problems is now stuck in the update loop today. If you break out of the update loop you can then try the numbered list above to see if that helps. Unfortunately, you have to wait until the next EPG comes around to see if it has worked!
